Parents often ask us, "Isn't my child too young for public speaking?" The short answer is no. Public speaking for children isn't about podiums and formal speeches. It's about learning to share thoughts clearly and confidently, and the earlier that begins, the more natural it feels.
Why public speaking matters for children
Speaking skills affect far more than the school stage. A child who can express themselves:
- takes part more actively in class discussions, projects and viva
- explains their thinking clearly, which helps in every subject
- makes friends and handles disagreements more easily
- feels more confident trying new things
- builds the communication skills that interviews, teamwork and leadership will ask of them later in life
How speaking skills grow
Every child moves at their own pace. Skills usually build in three stages, whatever the child's age.
Stage 1: Playing with words
At first, speaking should feel like play. Show and tell, simple storytelling and voice games such as speaking like a giant, then a mouse, build comfort and expression. The goal is enjoyment and courage, not perfection.
Stage 2: Adding structure
Children can now organise their ideas. They learn to plan a short talk with a beginning, middle and end, use body language and eye contact, and try simple debates. This is the perfect time to prepare for school presentations and competitions.
Stage 3: Thinking on their feet
As children form their own opinions, they become ready for formal debate, impromptu speaking, handling questions and leading group discussions. These skills prepare them for the bigger academic and social demands of their teenage years.
Signs your child is ready
- They talk a lot at home but go quiet in groups
- They have an upcoming school presentation, recitation or competition
- They want to speak up but say they feel nervous
- They enjoy stories, acting or performing
Is it ever too late?
Never. Children of any age can build confidence with the right support. The best time to start is simply when your child can enjoy it.
How our programme works
At Speak & Sparkle, levels are based on skill, not age. Every child starts with our Basic level to build strong foundations, then moves up to Advanced for presentations, debate and leadership. Karishma adapts the activities to suit each child's age.
