School elocution and debate competitions are a wonderful chance for children to shine. With the right preparation, even a nervous child can walk on stage feeling ready. Here's how to help.
Elocution tips
Choose the right piece
Pick a poem or passage your child genuinely likes and understands. Enthusiasm shows. Make sure it fits the time limit comfortably and suits their age.
Understand before memorising
Talk through what the piece means, line by line. When a child understands the feeling behind the words, their expression becomes natural rather than forced.
Work on the voice
- Clarity: say every word fully, especially the endings.
- Pace: slow down. Nervous speakers rush.
- Pauses: a short pause before an important line adds drama.
- Modulation: vary the volume and tone to match the mood of each part.
Use the body
Stand tall with feet steady. Look at the audience, not the floor. Use a few meaningful gestures rather than constant hand movement.
Debate tips
Structure every point
Teach a simple pattern: Point, Reason, Example. "School uniforms are a good idea (point) because they reduce pressure about clothes (reason). For example, children don't compare brands (example)."
Prepare for the other side
Ask your child to list the arguments the other team might make, and how they'd reply. This turns rebuttals from panic into planning.
Respond, don't attack
Good debaters challenge ideas, not people. "I understand that point, but…" sounds confident and respectful, and judges notice.
Finish strong
End with a short summary and a confident closing line. The last thing judges hear stays with them.
A simple practice plan
- Week 1: choose the topic or piece and understand it fully
- Week 2: draft, learn and rehearse out loud daily
- Week 3: perform for family, record a video and review it together
- Final days: light practice, good sleep and plenty of encouragement
On the day
Arrive early, breathe slowly, and remember that judges want every child to do well. Win or lose, competing is a brave step worth celebrating.
